6 Body-Shaming Reasons People Tell You to Wear a Bra – And Why It’s None of Their Business

Editor’s Note: Although women’s bodies, clothing choices, etc are constantly policied, they aren’t the only ones with breasts, nor are all people with breasts women. Bra-policing also affects trans, nonbinary, genderqueer, and intersex people with breasts. It also impacts disabled folks for whom bras aren’t an option – whether due to pain, sensory issues, and other reasons.

Do you have to wear a bra?

The choice is entirely up to you. But you might think it’s not okay to go braless if you listen to some of the things people say about it – and you might not realize that there’s body-shaming behind their message.

Whether you decide to wear a bra or not, you shouldn’t be shamed for your choice.
