Patricia ValoyPatricia is a Latina feminist activist and blogger, and a Civil Engineer who promotes STEM education for women. She received her Bachelor of Sciences from Columbia University, where she concentrated in Construction Management and Structural Engineering.

She combines her experiences as a Latina, a feminist, and an engineer to advocate and inspire girls considering careers in the fields of STEM and speak on transnational feminism. Patricia’s work mostly revolves around the Latino/a community, feminism, cultural identity, gender stereotypes, and workplace sexism.

Patricia’s writings can be found at her blog Womanisms, or at Flyover Feminism and Sex and Fessenjoon. Additionally, her work has been cross-posted on Double X Science, STEMinist, and Role/Reboot. Patricia was formerly a host at Let Your Voice Be Heard! Radio where she spoke about political and social issues.

  • Gender Bias, Sexism, and Stereotypes in STEM – In this presentation the speaker discusses the challenges women and minorities face in entering STEM fields from a very early age. The presenter discusses current statistics, gendered toys, stereotype threat, and cultural stigmas that keep women and minorities away from STEM fields.   • STEM Outreach for Girls and Minority Groups – This presentation discusses tool and techniques educators, groups, and organizations can use to engage girls and minority groups in STEM education. The presenter will provide resources that educators can use to further develop the interest of underrepresented minorities in STEM. 
  • Working in a Male-Dominated Fields – Once girls and minorities enter the professional world in STEM they find that stereotypes, sexism, and hostility are part of their daily lives. This presentation discusses the ways in which a workspace can be hostile and teaches individuals how to respond and/or handle situations.
  • Battling Sexism in STEM, Construction, and Other Non-Traditionally Female Employment – This presentation will explore the ways in which women have been traditionally pushed away from careers in blue collar male-dominated fields due to stereotypes and not abilities. It will also discuss methods to recruit and retain women in non-traditional employment and make the workplace more welcoming and less hostile to women.
  • Transnational Feminism and Cultural Identity – Feminism is complicated and multi-dimensional for transnational women. Our struggles are not always the same as those of mainstream feminists and we struggle for a voice in a world that sees us as “third world” women with a homogenous identity. This presentation discusses what transnational feminism is and how feminists can work together to recognize differences while building solidarity and bridging our struggles.
  • Latina/o Feminism and Ethno-Racial Identity – This presentation explores Latina identity and how our experiences, cultures, languages, and ethno-racial identity shape our feminist thought in the Unites States. In this discussion we explore mestizaje, colorism, multiculturalism, and language.

All topics can be adapted to be presentations, keynote speeches, or workshops and can be tailored to the audience. If you don’t see a topic that quite meets your needs but think we can cover it, just let us know. We are also willing to create a signature talk or workshop for groups.
