This Video Shows Why Everything You Know About Thanksgiving Is Wrong

Editor’s Note: Since the video was first published, the author has made an addendum correcting some of the language in the video that suggests that Native Americans are no longer around today. You can read her addendum here and find out more about why all racial justice work must address settler colonialism and the myths and untruths that come with it here.

Do you know why the US began celebrating Thanksgiving, what the first one was like, or even where the turkey comes from?

Chances are, what you think about this holiday is all a lie. But don’t worry – with MTV Decoded, Franchesca Ramsey has the truth about Thanksgiving and why we all believe so many myths about it.

She proves a good point about how insulting it is to Indigenous people for us to keep telling these mythical versions of what happened between them and the Pilgrims. And, in usual Chescaleigh style, she’s pretty damn hilarious while she’s at it.

We hope you enjoy this insightful history lesson.
