These 14 Sexual Assault Survivors Prove That It Can Happen to Anyone

Trigger warning: These images contain explicit victim-blaming, and mention sexual assault, childhood sexual abuse, transphobia, incest, and rape.

As society slowly begins to recognize the pervasive problem of sexual violence, it is important to remember that this abuse can affect anyone. People of all ages, genders, races, sizes, and sexualities have survived this kind of violence.

These photos of survivors with quotes said to them in the aftermath of their abuse (originally from Project Unbreakable) show how widespread this violence is.

If you are struggling with sexual assault or rape, RAINN has a free, confidential, 24/7 sexual assault hotline: 1.800.656.HOPE(4673). They also have an online hotline.

Project Unbreakable is a photography project aiming to give a voice to survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse. Created in October of 2011 by then 19 year old photographer Grace Brown, Project Unbreakable features photos of sexual assault survivors holding posters with quotes from their attackers. It provides a way of healing for sexual assault survivors. Since the conception, Project Unbreakable has featured over three thousand photographs, both photos taken by Grace and submissions from all over the world. Currently, Project Unbreakable travels to colleges and universities around North America to discuss the importance of sexual assault awareness and to showcase the work of Project Unbreakable. Visit the organization’s website to view more photos, submit your own, or learn more about the project. Follow them on Twitter @ProjUnbreakable.
