Time for a New Year’s Revolution: How Diet Culture Upholds Capitalism

The phrase “diet culture” refers to a society that is so inundated with dieting propaganda, oftentimes imperceptibly, that it affects how we relate to ourselves and each other. And in case you haven’t noticed, we live in one.

With 2015 upon nus, a lot of folks are undoubtedly making weight loss resolutions, dedicating themselves to a diet for January 1st.

But here’s the secret that the weight loss industry isn’t telling you: Yo-yo dieting cycle does absolutely nothing to help us and absolutely everything to uphold capitalism.

In this video, vlogger (and Co-Managing Editor for Everyday Feminism) Melissa A. Fabello uses food psychology to explain how the restrict-and-binge cycle is hurting everyone except those who are creating your body dissatisfaction in the first place.
