Are the Election Primaries Racist?

It’s primary season, the time when each political party in the US picks their presidential candidate. This process seems simple – so how could the primaries be racist?

Here’s Franchesca Ramsey with an important lesson on how the primaries don’t actually represent the racial makeup of the United States – and how they end up ignoring the concerns of people of color.

With a little background on how the primaries work, and a close look at Iowa and New Hampshire, Franchesca unpacks how the race for the highest position in the country is an example of institutional racism.

She also has some suggestions for what to do about it. Does this change your perception on what’s happening in the primaries?
