Native Americans Review Culturally Appropriated Music Festival Fashion

“We’ve become sort of mythologized, and we’re actually people.”

Coachella just went by, and there are many more music festivals on their way. So it’s time to talk about those fake headdresses and other “Native-inspired” music festival fashion.

Here are members of the Southern California Indian Center sharing their impressions of the outfits appropriated from their cultures.

Their perspective will show you exactly why it’s harmful when non-Native people exotify Natives by making a joke out of a culture that has taken hundreds of years of fighting to maintain.

If you really want to honor Native American culture, help amplify these voices and spread the word so everyone can think twice before making a headdress a fashion statement.
