Participant 1: Hey, did you hear?
Participant 2: No, what’s up?
Participant 1: James is dead.
Participant 2: What? Oh my god, what happened?
Participant 1: Apparently somebody killed him at a party.
Participant 2: What party? Was he there alone?
Participant 1: At that big party off-campus on Friday?
Participant 2: Oh man, wow. That sucks.
Participant 1: Yeah.
Participant 2: Was he drinking at the party?
Participant 1: Huh? I don’t know, I guess some. It was a party after all.
Participant 2: Yeah because alcohol makes it harder to fight off a murderer, and he may have made some bad choices about who to talk to.
Participant 1: Well, everybody was probably drinking some.
Participant 2: Yeah, yeah. I mean, what was he wearing though?
Participant 1: What?
Participant 2: You know how he wears all those V-neck T-shirts.
Participant 1: Yeah, but…
Participant 2: I’m just saying if you don’t want to get stabbed in the neck, consider wearing a turtleneck sweater or something.
Participant 1: I don’t think that really–
Participant 2: Also, James was super friendly.
Participant 1: Yeah, poor James.
Participant 2: I mean, he was so outgoing.
Participant 1: Yeah, nice guy.
Participant 2: He talked to everyone.
Participant 1: Yeah.
Participant 2: So it’s kind of no surprise that he eventually met a murderer.
Participant 1: What?
Participant 2: I’m just saying, if you don’t want to get murdered, don’t go around talking to strangers at parties and just expect it to be fine. Did he even blow the murder whistle that Student Life gave us?
Participant 1: No, I think it was in his coat. The murder happened so fast.
Participant 2: In his coat. Typical freshman move. I mean, one in five college students gets murdered. He should’ve been more careful. No one ever thinks it will happen to them.
Participant 1: I guess. His family must be devastated.
Participant 2: I know. They must be so ashamed that he let himself get murdered like that. It’s got to be so embarrassing for them.
Participant 1: What? No, I meant—
Participant 2: So did they find out who did it? I mean, assuming it was a murder and not some assisted suicide thing. Hey, maybe James really wanted this to happen.
Participant 1: No, he definitely didn’t. And it was definitely Robert. Some people walked in on the murder, but they didn’t think it was any of their business.
Participant 2: Robert? Oh, he’s such a nice guy. He’s definitely not a murderer.
Participant 1: He is. He definitely did it.
Participant 2: Yeah, well he just felt like ending James’s life and he did, but he’s not like a “murderer murderer.” Besides, James is—was—such “jailbait,” you know?
Participant 1: Huh?
Participant 2: I mean, he just had that look that you can totally see wanting to commit a felony and murder him. It’s perfectly normal. Poor Robert. Really, it’s sad how many young people’s lives are ruined just because they kill a few people in college.
