Are Debtors Courts Unfairly Targeting Minorities?

“What if they sent you to jail for being broke?”

Huh? Well, many people (read: mostly people of color) really do get sent to jail for just that.

Nearly two hundred years ago, the United States set up debtors’ prisons for people who couldn’t pay their debts. Today’s modern-day prisons have taken their place and continue to arrest and jail poor people who are unable to pay through criminal procedures that violate their basic human rights.

It’s something we think people need to be aware of because, the fact is, jail time only happens to certain people in certain places. This video lays it all out in a way that’s easy to understand.
