These Double Standards Have Got to Go

Text: Some mothers teach their children not to stare at men, but they have no problem judging other women’s bodies.

Panel 1: A disabled man with spiked green hair and gauges is smiling and walking by. A woman speaking to her child says, “Bobby, don’t stare. It’s rude.”

Panel 2: The same woman is walking with a friend and both have an angry expression on their faces as a fat woman who is smiling and listening to music walks by. The woman says, “I can’t believe how some people let themselves go.”

Text: Some men feel threatened when they notice someone watching them, but they feel entitled to stare at women.

Panel 3: A buff man wearing sports clothes is walking past a masculine-presenting person sitting at a table. The buff man has an angry expression and says, “What they hell are you looking at?! Mind your own business!”

Panel 4: The same man is outside and standing next to a woman in sports clothes. He says, “If you don’t want attention don’t show so much skin!” She is angry and flicking him off.

Text: Some police argue that it’s invasive to be recorded while on duty, but they find nothing wrong with profiling people of color.

Panel 5: A police officer is standing and saying, “How can we do our jobs if we’re always being watched? Bodycams are an invasion of privacy!”

Panel 6: The same police officer is standing outside the car of a feminine-presenting person of color, who has a worried expression. The officer says, “There’s been a break-in so we’re stopping any car that doesn’t fit the neighborhood.”

Text: We believe men when they say they want privacy, and we invest in a culture that protects their privacy. However, in that same culture, it’s ok to judge, harass, and target women, and then insult the women who ask for the same cultural protection.

Panel 7: Two women are standing and embracing each other. One says, “Stop staring at us.” The other says, “It’s creepy.” A man standing next to them says, “So a guy can’t even look at girls now? Ugh, learn to take a compliment.”

Text: And that double standard is UNACCEPTABLE.
