Panel 1
The title of the comic appears in big letters with fanfare. A doctor poses cheerily with the display.
Doctor: My own biases mean I don’t always have the patient’s best interest at heart!
Panel 2
Caption: Trans masculine person
A trans man/trans masculine person sits before a doctor, looking conflicted and worried.
Doctor: Are you sure? You’re such a healthy young woman. Testosterone would increase your risk of diabetes and heart attack!
Panel 3
The doctor stands alone, looking incredulous.
Doctor: What do you mean those risks are the same ones cis men have?
Panel 4
Caption: Cis man
The doctor is now addressing a cis man. Both seem pleased and are in agreement.
Doctor: I believe increasing your testosterone levels will really help you. You will be able to regain some of your energy levels as well as your libido.
Panel 5
The doctor alone again, hands on hips, speaking haughtily.
Doctor: Of course I assessed the risks of testosterone treatments for men! What kind of doctor do you think I am?
Panel 6
Caption: Trans feminine person
A trans woman sits in another room with another doctor. Her arms are crossed defensively while the doctor examines a clipboard impartially.
Doctor: Looking at the questionnaire, I can’t in good faith diagnose you with gender dysphoria. I won’t be granting your request for hormone replacement therapy.
Panel 7
The doctor stands alone, shaking a finger.
Doctor: You can’t fool me! You’re not enough of a woman for hormones!
Panel 8
Caption: Cis woman
The same doctor addresses a cis woman, who is listening intently.
Doctor: I would recommend starting you on a dose of progesterone. It will help the uncomfortable symptoms of menopause you are experiencing, and you will feel more youthful as well!
Panel 9
The doctor is alone again, smiling and gesturing generously.
Doctor: I am only too happy to help patients feel like “real” women again!
Panel 10
Caption: Intersex kid
A third doctor is in her clinic, this time addressing a small child with long hair tied up in a ponytail.
Doctor: These hormones will help you be more like a normal girl. It’s no trouble!
Panel 11
Caption: 15 years later
The doctor is with the same intersex person, now a young adult.
Intersex Person: Actually, I don’t identify as a girl. I want to take testosterone.
Panel 12
The doctor crosses her arms, looking away. The patient looks unpleased.
Doctor: Uh, I’m not sure I can help you with that. I’m not an expert on “intersex issues.”
Panel 13
The doctor is alone.
Doctor: I’m covering my discomfort with the existence of intersex people by pretending like intersex healthcare requires a specialist when the required research easily falls within my job description.
Panel 14
The doctor finishes her statement in the clinic room with the patient, who crosses their arms angrily.
Doctor: It doesn’t matter if intersex as well as trans people are frequently harmed by or denied healthcare all together on top of the often deadly discrimination they face outside of my office. What matters is my comfort.
Intersex Person: Wow, you’re a jerk.
