In the fall of 2013, Sasha Fleischman was set on fire on a public bus because they (Sasha’s preferred gender pronoun) wore a skirt with a men’s shirt.
San Francisco Magazine asked photographer Chloe Aftel to shoot a portrait of individuals who refuse to define themselves as strictly male or female. Sasha identifies as agender and others in this series identify as non-binary or genderqueer.
While we, at Everyday Feminism, would love to see more diversity of race, body types, and age, this photo series helps raise awareness around non-binary folk.
Aftel explains, “This series was shot in a meaningful place for each subject, most often the home. It is an exploration of what this movement looks like and what it means for each person involved.”
