Text: Shelby Buys a Pop
Panel 1: Shelby, a disabled person, has just bought a soda and is standing by the soda machine. The word “whateverrr” is above her head.
Panel 2: A woman approaches Shelby and says, “Omg! You’re such an inspiration!”
Panel 3: Shelby, rolling her eyes, says, “I don’t need a standing ovation every time I’m thirsty.”
Panel 4: The other woman, looking monstrous, yells, “Can’t you take a compliment!?” The word “scoff” appears four times around her head.
Panel 5: Shelby says, “It’s not a compliment. ‘You’re an inspiration’ means ‘You look really weird. How are you doing that?'”
Panel 6: The other woman, looking even more monstrous (this time spitting and foaming at the mouth), yells, “That’s not what I said! You’re putting words in my mind!” The words “turbo scoff” appear three times around her head.
Panel 7: Shelby, looking angry/annoyed, says, “Look lady! When you tell a person with disabilities that, you’re infantalizing them because of what you assume about their abilities!” The other woman is still bearing sharp teeth.
Panel 8: Shelby says, “Will you hold this?” (referring to the soda bottle in her arm). The other woman has returned to normal and while sort of smiling says “Sure.”
Panel 9: Shelby, holding up her arm, says, “Pretend I’m flipping you off.” The other woman’s mouth is agape as she holds the soda.
